New: Supervisor Professional Certification from Emerit

Tourism professionals can showcase their supervisory skills with a fully revamped Supervisor Professional Certification program from Emerit.

Developed with invaluable input from supervisors actively working in a wide range of tourism businesses, this program reflects the current and emerging knowledge and skills needed to succeed as a supervisor.

The program entails:

  • An online, multiple-choice exam that assesses the knowledge and application of the competencies in the Supervisor National Occupational Standards
  • A work history verification, wherein candidates must provide evidence of having worked 3,000 hours (or 1.5 years, based on full-time hours) in the tourism sector, with a minimum of 750 hours in a supervisory role (about 6 months full-time)
  • A performance evaluation, in which the candidate partakes in a virtual, structured interview with a trained assessor, and shows that they can apply the competencies in the Supervisor National Occupational Standards

Access to the National Occupational Standards is included, so candidates can review what competencies will be evaluated, from service excellence and communication through to digital competence, business management, finance, and more.

A practice exam is also provided, offering a preview of the format and level of questions to expect.

For those who wish to have more support in preparing for the certification program, eLearning is available for an additional fee.

Who Can Take the Supervisor Certification?

The Emerit Supervisor Professional Certification is aimed at supervisors operating within the tourism industry as entry-level managers who report to another member of the management team. They manage people, resources, budgets, and time effectively within a team-oriented environment. Although supervisory positions within each industry group have their own unique responsibilities, supervisors generally supervise and coordinate employees, implement employee training, manage daily labour and labour costs, and oversee client service.

What Do Successful Candidates Receive?

Candidates who successfully complete all three components earn the nationally recognized Tourism Certified Supervisor (TCS) designation, which they can display on their business cards, social media profiles, résumé, and more.

Can Someone Start with One Part of the Program?

Yes, each of the three components is available for individual purchase. An Occupational Knowledge Certificate is granted to those who pass the exam. However, the TCS designation is only rewarded upon completion of all three components.

Can Business Owners Get Their Staff Certified?

Absolutely! Businesses that certify their employees show that they value their team’s professional development and want to invest in their career progression. Such businesses benefit from increased productivity and sales, decreased employee turnover and absenteeism, more repeat customers, and better teamwork and efficiency from their staff.
